Kitting With HARDWIRE For automated kitting and complex pattern cutting plasma or laser is the way to go. Typical CNC plasma or laser cutters found in almost every well equipped machine shop do a beautiful job. The advantage of plasma or laser cutting is that the ends of the cords are welded together as a result of the intense short duration heat. Patterns can be beautifully cut and depending on the plasma machine, air pressure, and cutting speed, many plies can be cut at a time. Unlike traditional automated composite ply cutting, plasma and laser machines have very few moving parts and there are no blades to wear out, resulting in less down time and usually lower cost equipment. In the case where Hardwire may be in a prepreg form, it is important to test this cutting method to ensure applicability to the overall system. However, for dry Hardwire tapes intended for down stream resin process, this technique is smooth, accurate and yields excellent results. |
